Thermal Roofing Systems, Inc. Improves Roofs on Entire RagingWire Data Center Footprint

Jan 31, 2012

SACRAMENTO, CA (Dec. 13, 2011) –  Thermal insulation is an integral part of any residential or commercial building’s plans, because a drafty house or building can cost its owner more money to maintain a suitable environment.  In the data center industry, thermal insulation doesn’t just save money, it conserves a large amount of energy and improves data floor temperature management.  More importantly, a spray-on foam insulation roof solution minimizes the potential for roof leakage, a very important factor in data center operations.  That’s why RagingWire Data Centers partnered with Thermal Roofing Systems, Inc., to provide an energy-efficient, leak-tight roof insulation solution.

Though there are many roof insulation products on the market, they don’t promise the advantages of sprayed polyurethane foam insulation.  Sprayed polyurethane foam insulation eliminates unwanted air flow and drafts, performs well in hot and cold temperatures, acts as a moisture barrier, adds structural strength and protects against insect invasion.

After evaluating different roofing options and vendors, RagingWire decided to team with Thermal Roofing Systems to improve roofs on all three of its data center facilities.

“After a lot of research, we concluded that sprayed polyurethane foam insulation was the most effective, cost-saving product for our data center roof requirements,” said Jason Weckworth, vice president of data center operations at RagingWire.  “Thermal Roofing Systems presented the best workmanship and best value and we have forged a great relationship over the course of this project.”

The 460,000-square-foot roof improvement project called for Thermal Roofing Systems to apply spray foam insulation and roof coating on RagingWire two data center facilities in Sacramento and its newest data center under construction in Virginia over the course of several months.

“The RagingWire roof improvement project really demonstrates the breadth of services that Thermal Roof Systems offers,” remarked Tom Schaal, vice president of sales and marketing at Thermal Roof Systems.  “We hope to continue our partnership with RagingWire as the company continues to grow and expand.”

For the first facility, RagingWire’s original Sacramento data center (CA1), Thermal Roof Systems sent a seven-man crew to remove most of the existing cap sheet roof and replace most of the substrate.  After cap sheet and substrate replacement, DensDeck was applied for fire protection along with IsoBoard for additional insulation. Both materials were screwed onto the substrate, and spray polyurethane foam was then sprayed on the top. Roofing coatings were applied on top of the foam to finish off the project.  The same was completed for RagingWire’s second Sacramento data center (CA2), except that the roof and substrate did not need to be replaced.

The final building of the three-part project called for Thermal Roof Systems to remove the ballast rock on the roof of RagingWire’s 130,000-square-foot data center facility in Ashburn, Va.  Much like the first building, the Ashburn facility was not occupied, giving Thermal Roof System’s crew the ability freely work around the job site.  IsoBoard was fastened into the metal deck,  sprayed polyurethane foam was applied, and then roof coatings finished the roof.
